What would you ask your teacher?

Cutting from the Evening Mail, Sat Sept 30th 1976

In the year 1973 a fire was started by a pupil. It happened twice – once in the year 1973 and once in the year 1976.  I found out about it from a newspaper article:

‘the fire was started deliberately in the early hours at Paganel Junior School…the fire almost gutted the interior of the two storey administration block and smoke damaged the school hall and its nine classrooms.”

The Building Site of 2015

This is Soutir in all his gear!

This is Soutir in all his gear!

We looked around the new extension for the school. The builders generously accomodated us for the hour (3pm – 4pm). They showed us round the site, apparently they have special boots that have metal caps on the toes to protect their toes from getting squished. I find it very intresting that the school is ascending in number. We had to wear special clothing for protection.

We will be interviewing the builders soon, taking more photos and documenting changes at our school.

Our new archive after school club team have been coming for just 3 weeks and they’ve already got to grips with the box of horrors (all archives have at least one) to sort and catalogue.

They’ve also started to use the new nexus tablets that the project bought to support with the e-catalogue.

Mollie, Sophie, Sam, Ashfaq, Harley and Jessica will be posting soon to let you know more about Paganel Archives and what they’re up to so please keep following.

We’re Back! New Young Archivists team for Paganel Archives Raring to go

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting the 6 new young archivists from Paganel year 6 who have opted to take on the school archive for this coming year.

We had a lovely session familiarising ourselves with what’s in Paganel Archives and making a plan for this term. Most of the group seem to be keen to get cataloguing the outstanding material which is great!

Ashfaq, already an experienced cataloguer, is up for interviewing local people for a new project to capture some more Weoley Castle local history. Definitely hope to be able to sort that out.  Visitors from Weoley Castle community group, earlier in the summer, were very keen to come back to the archives and share their stories with us.

I also had a great conversation with Mr Philp about how to open up Paganel Archive material about the 2nd World War for next year’s 75th anniversary; our log books are a fascinating read about evacuation and air raids and VE day celebrations.  We also really want to go back to The National Archives with year 6 next summer and maybe take in Parliamentary Archives too!

It’s history we’re into but Paganel Archives After School Club certainly isn’t that!
